The Television Academy (formerly ATAS) and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) have begun exploratory talks about reuniting, nearly 50 years after their acrimonious 1977 split. Both boards voted overwhelmingly in favour of opening discussions, and the Television Academy has extended sitting governors' terms by a year to allow them to see the process through. A reunification would end the long-standing division between the two bodies, which currently split Emmy honours largely along primetime and daytime lines.

No formal timeline or deadline has been set for the talks. In a joint statement, representatives of both organisations said television remains "the most powerful medium" for shaping culture, and that sweeping changes in the TV business make this "the right moment" to explore combining forces for a stronger, unified voice. The two academies split on 30 June 1977 and spent decades at odds before relations began thawing in 2004, when they struck a deal moving the International Academy to ATAS, transferring the Los Angeles chapter to NATAS and ending litigation; further cooperation followed in 2022 with the shift of game shows to Television Academy jurisdiction. Any full merger would echo the earlier reunification of the SAG and AFTRA actors' unions.
