‘Twilight Zone’s Most Chilling Episode Was Officially Ruined by a Bad Performance
“The Twilight Zone” episode “He’s Alive!” follows Peter Vollmer, played by Dennis Hopper, as he tries to build a neo-Nazi movement and receives guidance from a mysterious figure revealed to be Adolf Hitler. Rod Serling considered the story especially strong and chilling, but criticised Hopper’s performance, saying it undermined the script.
Serling wrote both a television version and a feature-length screenplay, which added an FBI investigation into Vollmer’s activities. The film was never made: after the series returned for its fourth season with hour-long episodes, network budget limits and Serling’s workload made the project unfeasible. Serling later worked on the screenplay for “Planet of the Apes”.
- Serling wanted “He’s Alive!” to become a feature film.
- Budget limits and his workload prevented the film.
- He praised the script but criticised Hopper’s acting.
