Counter-terror police arrested two men in their 30s in Manchester on Sunday over a suspected terrorist plot to target the city's Jewish community. Officers from the Metropolitan Police seized them at an address in Manchester's Northern Quarter and raided a nearby hostel, with the arrests coming on the eve of Yom Kippur and exactly one year after a deadly attack on Heaton Park Synagogue that killed two community members. Police confirmed they do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.

The men were arrested under the Terrorism Act and remain in custody following what authorities describe as a long-running proactive investigation. The arrests come almost exactly 12 months after Islamic State supporter Jihad Al-Shamie attacked Heaton Park Synagogue on 2 October 2024, fatally stabbing Melvin Cravitz, 66. When a police marksman opened fire on the attacker, a round tragically struck Adrian Daulby, 53, who was helping barricade the doors, killing him, and also wounded Yoni Finlay, 39, who survived. Community leaders including the Jewish Representative Council have praised police action whilst calling on the government to address the root causes of extremism rather than relying solely on security measures.
