Two experienced skydivers die after parachutes tangle over California
Two experienced, licensed skydivers died after their parachutes became entangled in a collision about 150 feet above the ground in California. The deaths occurred during an organised skydiving event at Skydive Elsinore, and local authorities are investigating.
The women, Levi Pimentel, 29, of Illinois, and Georgia Jean, 56, of South Dakota, were taken to hospital and pronounced dead. The centre said there was no indication of equipment problems and that it was co-operating with investigators; it is unclear whether weather played a part. US Parachute Association data puts the fatality rate at about 0.46 deaths per 100,000 jumps, with canopy collisions among the leading causes.
