Two fishermen rescued from Pacific after clinging onto cool box with no food or water for five days
Two Mexican fishermen, Daniel Guerrero Martinez, 53, and Jose Luis Portela Villegas, 32, have been rescued after spending five days adrift in the Pacific Ocean without food or water. The pair disappeared after their boat, the Camaronera, sank in waters off Chiapas, and survived by clinging to a cool box that had been on board until Mexican Navy personnel located and recovered them.
The men, who set off from a town near Guatemala, lost radio contact on 14 August, prompting a fishing cooperative to raise the alarm. A Navy search using ships, an interceptor boat and aircraft eventually found them roughly 130 nautical miles (about 241km) off the Chiapas coast on 19 August. Both were treated by naval medics for severe dehydration, flown to hospital by helicopter, and later reunited with their families in the coastal village of Paredon; authorities have launched an investigation, saying bad weather and strong winds likely caused the boat to drift out to sea.
