Twenty-seven people were killed in two mass shootings in South Africa within hours of each other, highlighting the country’s persistent gun-violence crisis. Seventeen people died after gunmen attacked a bar near Johannesburg, while 10 were killed outside an entertainment venue near Cape Town.

In Johannesburg, eight gunmen reportedly opened fire on customers, injured 15 people and set two vehicles alight before fleeing. The Cape Town attack left 11 injured, and no arrests or motives had been announced; the shootings followed another attack in Durban that killed 11 people.
