Two storms in two days as Austen and Boelo target UK

BBC Science ·

Storm Austen is forecast to bring strong winds to south-west England on Friday, followed by Storm Boelo across the UK over the weekend. The back-to-back storms could disrupt travel and power supplies, with flooding also possible after recent wet weather.

An amber warning for Austen covers Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, Plymouth and parts of Devon from 1am to 10am on Friday, with gusts widely reaching 60-70mph and possibly 80mph in exposed areas. Boelo could bring 70-80mph gusts to western Scotland, while yellow warnings cover Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England from Saturday into Sunday. Storms can arrive in clusters when a strong jet stream helps low-pressure systems develop rapidly; UK storms are most common in winter.

In short

  • Austen and Boelo are forecast to hit the UK on successive days.
  • South-west England faces strong winds on Friday.
  • Boelo could bring gusts of 70-80mph to western Scotland.
