Two teenagers died when a Volkswagen Polo carrying five people left the road and plunged into the River Nene in Cambridgeshire. An inquest heard that the 18-year-old driver, Declan Berry, had been travelling at about 90mph before apparently hitting a pothole and losing control, with the speed of the vehicle considered the main contributing factor.

Eden Bunn, 16, was recovered from the submerged car the following day, while Berry’s body was found two weeks later; three other occupants escaped with non-life-threatening injuries. The 60mph road reportedly had numerous potholes and uneven surfaces, despite more than 100 previous complaints, but the coroner concluded that Berry died in a road traffic collision and that driving at a lower speed would probably have reduced the severity of the crash.
