U2 announced *Carnaval De Luz*, their first album of new material in nine years, as they approach the band’s 50th anniversary. Due on 13 November, it signals another attempt to reinvent their sound, with a more adventurous and jagged approach than the first single, “Street of Dreams”, initially suggested.

The band describe the record as shaped by a deeply troubled period and guided by what guitarist the Edge calls “defiant joy” amid dark times. Its carnival setting and unusually prominent Spanish-language lyrics reflect that outlook; the opening track, “Go (Carnaval De Luz)”, features Brian Eno and echoes the group’s recurring effort to break with its past and begin again.
