U2 Speak Up About Ed Sheeran, Macklemore “Free Palestine” Controversy, Criticize Rich Stadium Owners
U2 members have spoken out in support of Macklemore’s right to express political views after he was removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour for saying “Free Palestine” on stage. The band also defended Sheeran, saying he was in a difficult position, and criticised wealthy venue owners and promoters for using their influence to limit artists’ speech.
The Edge praised other acts and Sheeran’s backing band for leaving the tour in solidarity with Macklemore. Stadium operators, led by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, reportedly objected to Macklemore’s remarks and threatened to block him from performing; Sheeran said the promoter made the decision to remove him. U2 said artists should be free to speak provided they do not incite violence, and condemned the situation in Gaza. The band is due to release its 16th album on 16 November and begin a world tour the following February.
