Ubisoft will close the servers for its NFT-enabled strategy game Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles on 30 October, ending a project launched in 2024 after enthusiasm for NFTs had already waned. The closure matters because it illustrates the difficulty of sustaining blockchain-based games, even when their digital items can be traded, and follows Ubisoft’s earlier move away from the game’s Web3 features.

The game had a small but established player base, though many players had expected its shutdown after Ubisoft announced in May that it would reduce its Web3 functionality. Champions Tactics allowed battle units to be minted and traded on a blockchain marketplace; Ubisoft is now encouraging players to move to Might and Magic Fates, a card game where cards can be bought and sold using cash or cryptocurrency.
