Ubisoft Officially Reveals New Ghost Recon Game

Polygon · 2 weeks ago

Ubisoft has officially confirmed that a new Ghost Recon game is in development, ending months of speculation as part of celebrations marking the franchise's 25th anniversary. The announcement was made by live producer Irina-Gabriela Popa during an anniversary livestream, though Ubisoft withheld almost all specifics, giving no trailer, screenshots, artwork or even a title for the project. The reveal matters chiefly as confirmation rather than a substantive unveiling, with the publisher instead directing fans to sign up for its Ghost Recon Insider Program to gain early access to future closed tests.

Leaks had already pointed to the project, reportedly codenamed Project OVR, which is said to have endured a troubled multi-year development. Reports suggest it will abandon the open-world looter-shooter format of recent instalments in favour of a more grounded, first-person tactical shooter experience. Alongside the announcement, Ubisoft unveiled the Last Rites update for 2017's Ghost Recon Wildlands, adding a new mission, extensive gameplay customisation options and 4K/60fps support for current-generation consoles; Wildlands was also made free to play from 6 to 10 August to mark the anniversary.
