Uefa close to selecting candidate to run against Infantino in Fifa election

The Guardian ·

Uefa and its allies are close to choosing a candidate to challenge Gianni Infantino for the Fifa presidency, with a decision potentially due next week. The effort comes ahead of the March election and a deadline of 18 November for candidates to confirm they are standing.

The challenger would need 106 votes, including substantial support from Asia, Concacaf and Africa, to defeat Infantino; Arsène Wenger is not thought to be a serious contender. Uefa is also pursuing documents about the failed Fifa Forward Enterprise scheme through US courts and says Fifa has yet to answer 42 governance questions, while Fifa denies wrongdoing and accuses Uefa of harassment.

In short

  • Uefa may name an Infantino challenger next week.
  • Candidates must confirm by 18 November.
  • A challenger needs 106 votes to win.
