Uganda has unveiled a statue of Yonatan Netanyahu, the elder brother of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, marking 50 years since he died leading the Entebbe hostage rescue mission. The monument, unveiled by Ugandan army chief Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, stands outside the old airport terminal where the raid took place and is intended to honour Netanyahu's courage, while also symbolising the improved relationship between Uganda and Israel since the events of 1976.

The Entebbe raid followed the hijacking of an Air France flight from Tel Aviv, which was diverted via Athens and Libya to Uganda, where dictator Idi Amin welcomed the hijackers. On 3 July 1976, Israeli commandos stormed the airport in an operation lasting under 90 minutes, freeing more than 100 hostages; Yonatan Netanyahu was the only Israeli soldier killed, alongside three hostages, the hijackers, and at least 45 Ugandan soldiers. Kainerugaba described the mission as historically significant and acknowledged the episode as "a painful chapter" for Uganda, while praising the countries' current ties as a "partnership characterised by mutual trust, respect and co-operation".
