A Ukrainian mother who fled Russia with her three children in 2022 is facing possible deportation after the Home Office refused her asylum claim and declined to renew her visa. Oksana Guseva, 41, an ethnic Ukrainian born in Ukraine when it was part of the Soviet Union, left Moscow and her pro-Putin husband via the Homes for Ukraine Scheme, but has struggled to secure permanent status because she holds a Russian rather than Ukrainian passport, and Kyiv has frozen citizenship applications from Russian nationals since the war began.

Ms Guseva, who says she would be arrested and separated from her children if forced back to Russia, has had two asylum claims rejected and accused the Home Office of "abandoning" her family after initially granting protection. She and her children, aged eight to 13, along with her 64-year-old mother, have settled in Greenwich, south-east London, where the children attend Ukrainian school and the family say they are fully integrated into British life. They are now appealing the Home Office's decision while facing the prospect of losing their home.
