Underwater Life Breaks New Comedy Ground in ‘Submarine Jim,’ Xilam’s latest Animated IP
Xilam, the French animation studio, has unveiled "Submarine Jim" as its latest animated series, showcasing it to international buyers at Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Le Havre alongside other titles including "Chickies," "Oggy & the Cockroaches" and "Zig & Sharko". The show, created by Frédéric Martin (director of "Oggy Oggy"), follows a young dolphin named Jim who takes charge of an "inverted" submarine filled with fish and sea water, blending slapstick children's comedy with subtler humour aimed at older viewers. Its strong reception comes despite a broader decline in French animation sales and exports over the past year.
The series is co-produced with Super RTL and France Télévisions and has already been licensed to numerous broadcasters, including the BBC (UK and Ireland), RTS, RTBF, VRT, NPO, YLE, NRK and Noga, as well as Warner Bros. Discovery across EMEA, Latin America, Southeast Asia and South Korea. Aimed primarily at children aged 6-10, the 52 x 11-minute series draws on workplace-comedy tropes for added adult appeal, with a distinctive hand-drawn 2D visual style developed by artist François Maumont and art director Clémence Bourson.
