Prospect secures access to 7,000 Google UK workers under new law
Prospect has reached an agreement with Google UK to organise workers across its UK operations, following new legislation giving unions rights to access workplaces. The deal allows the union to hold sessions and contact staff, potentially strengthening workers’ voice on issues such as pay, flexibility, artificial intelligence and workplace culture.
The agreement covers about 7,000 workers, including YouTube staff but excluding DeepMind, where the Communication Workers Union is seeking a separate arrangement. Prospect’s deal follows a similar agreement with Meta, which employs about 5,000 people in the UK. Google said the agreement meets new legal requirements while maintaining its existing direct dialogue with staff; from January, employers must also tell workers about their right to join a union.
In short
- Prospect can organise Google’s UK workforce.
- The agreement covers about 7,000 workers, excluding DeepMind.
- New UK rules give unions workplace access rights.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Union access can give workers a clearer way to raise shared concerns about pay, flexibility, AI and workplace culture, especially where individual staff may have limited influence. The agreement also gives effect to new legal rights and could complement Google’s existing staff dialogue by providing an independent channel for representation.
The case against
Google’s emphasis on direct dialogue reflects the view that staff and management can address workplace concerns through existing channels without adding another layer of representation. Employers may also reasonably want to meet the new legal requirements while preserving flexibility in how they engage with employees across different teams and roles.
Explained simply
Prospect is a UK trade union, an organisation that represents workers in discussions with employers. Google’s UK workforce includes staff at its search, advertising and YouTube businesses; DeepMind, its AI research company, is not part of this arrangement.
A new UK law gives unions rights to access workplaces and speak with employees about joining. The rules are intended to make it easier for workers to learn about union membership and representation.
Union representation can give workers a collective way to raise issues such as pay, flexible working and the effects of new technology. Google says it already has direct discussions with staff, so the agreement sits alongside those existing channels.
