Universal Music and Sony Want to Know How Many AI-Generated Songs DistroKid Releases
Universal Music Group and Sony Music are seeking court orders requiring DistroKid to disclose how many AI-generated songs it distributes each month and provide details of its AI detection tools. They say the information is needed for their ongoing case against AI music generator Suno, where the impact of AI-created music on the market is disputed.
The companies say DistroKid has refused to provide the subpoenaed records and that it plays a major role in distributing AI-generated music. Their filing says DistroKid sent nearly 12 million tracks to one major streaming service between March and September 2026, accounting for more than half of all tracks delivered there. UMG separately sued DistroKid in September, alleging it enabled mass uploads of AI-generated songs that dilute royalties; DistroKid denies the allegations.
- UMG and Sony want DistroKid’s monthly AI song figures.
- They say DistroKid sent nearly 12 million tracks to one service.
- DistroKid disputes UMG’s separate allegations.
