Upcoming RPG Promises Neverwinter Nights Vibes With a Steampunk Touch

Polygon · 3 hours ago

French developer and publisher Super AC has officially announced Covenant of Gears: The Three Musketeers, a tactical RPG that aims to recapture the spirit of classic CRPGs such as Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate. The game reimagines Alexandre Dumas's novels in a steampunk-inflected, alternate-history 17th-century France, with players controlling D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers, each given a distinct combat role. It stands out for reviving a nostalgic style of RPG that has become increasingly rare, appealing to fans of the genre's late-1990s and early-2000s golden age.

The four playable characters each have an assigned class and customisable skill tree: D'Artagnan is the warrior, Porthos the tank, Athos the sharpshooter, and Aramis the assassin, with coordinated team manoeuvres available. Combat is real-time with tactical pause, and the game will include a modular campaign editor for building and sharing custom adventures via Steam Workshop, echoing Neverwinter Nights' Aurora Toolset. A Kickstarter campaign is due to launch soon to fund development, though the game is not expected to reach early access until the fourth quarter of 2027.
