Upscale Officially Launches As One-Stop Shop For Microdramas

Deadline · 2 hours ago

Upscale Media Films, which is producing a slate of vertical shows with Hartbeat, has formally launched as a full-service production company for the microdrama market. Founder and CEO Malik Davis is building the business around owning a portfolio of published book properties paired with an in-house crew that develops, casts, shoots and edits content, aiming to cut the development and packaging costs that typically slow adaptation and to allow low-budget microdramas to be tested before being adapted into longer-form films or TV series. This vertically integrated model underpins the company's launch and its wider bet that owning the pipeline end-to-end will let it move quickly while still meeting the standards of partners such as Hartbeat.

The flagship example is a slate based on novels by bestselling author Blake Karrington, whose 20 titles being adapted for microdrama platform aTwist have sold more than 16.5 million copies and generated over 271 million page reads; Karrington now works directly within Upscale's development team. The company is also producing an original horror anthology, Exotic Foods, using an AI-assisted workflow, and has further projects in development or production, including Trapstar, The King of the South, Single Ladies, Scandalous, R.I.C.O. Detroit, Adrenaline Junkies, Blindsided by Love (from actor Quinton Aaron) and The Brown Family, the latter featuring original music from Organized Noize.
