Jack Whaley, a 22-year-old golfer from Doncaster, has become only the second Englishman since 1911 to win the US Amateur Championship, sparking celebrations at his home club, Rotherham Golf Club. The victory carries significant sporting rewards, securing Whaley places in the fields for the Masters, the US Open, and The Open at St Andrews in 2027, as well as an automatic spot on the Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup team.

Whaley, who has been a member at Rotherham Golf Club for nearly a decade, was cheered on by fellow members after his win on Sunday, with club director Rob Norton calling it "the pinnacle in amateur golf". He will now compete for Great Britain & Ireland against the United States at Lahinch in Ireland on 5 and 6 September. Whaley, who now attends Florida State University, previously considered quitting the sport after repeatedly missing tournament cuts, but Norton credited his eventual success to hard work and steady improvement rather than natural prodigy talent.
