US bars DeepSeek technology from most civilian government systems

BBC Technology ·

The US has ordered DeepSeek AI technology removed from most civilian government systems, citing no specific security concerns in its public notice. The move adds to tensions with China over AI, which President Donald Trump has described as a key area of competition between the countries.

The ban took effect at the end of July and covers civilian agencies including the Treasury, State and Justice departments, but excludes the Department of Defense. It also applies to technology built using DeepSeek models. The company’s open-source tools are popular partly because they are cheaper to use: DeepSeek said training its debut model cost about $6 million, compared with roughly $100 million for OpenAI’s GPT-4.
