US consumers are ‘more wary than willing’ to engage with AI in entertainment content, Luminate study finds

A new report from Luminate Intelligence has found that US consumers are generally more cautious than enthusiastic about engaging with entertainment content made using generative AI. The findings, part of the "AI & Media: Audience Attitudes" study published on 24 July, matter because they highlight persistent consumer scepticism towards AI-generated films, TV shows, music and other media, even as the technology becomes more widely used across the entertainment industry.

The report, based on Luminate's US Entertainment 365 survey, found attitudes were fairly consistent across media types, with AI-written news facing the strongest opposition and AI-assisted video game assets facing the least, with 40% of respondents indifferent. Age proved a major factor: over-55s were the most negative across all categories, while 13-17 year-olds were net positive, with a striking 58-point gap between this age group and 18-24 year-olds on AI-scripted films, TV and social media content. Luminate said this shows Gen Z should not be treated as a single group with uniform views. Separately, the company's 2025 Year-End Music Report found 44% of US respondents would like a song less if they knew AI had produced it, while Deezer reported that AI-generated tracks made up over half of its daily uploads for the first time in June.
