US datacenters used around 17 billion gallons of water in 2023, three times the amount consumed in 2014, according to a Congressional Research Service (CRS) report published by the Library of Congress. Around 97 percent of the water supplied to facilities comes from municipal drinking water systems, though water service agreements with operators can restrict disclosure of usage figures. The report notes cooling technology choices involve trade-offs between water and energy use, with evaporation-based systems more energy-efficient but thirstier than air-cooled alternatives, and points to ongoing transparency concerns, including a recent lawsuit alleging Amazon Web Services misrepresented its water use in Northern Virginia.
