The U.S. Department of Education has published data revealing approximately 1,100 allegations of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault against public school staff during the 2023-24 academic year. This information emerged from the department's Civil Rights Data Collection, a mandatory survey covering over 17,000 public school districts and 97,000 schools nationwide. The findings underscore the scope of sexual misconduct allegations within schools and the ongoing efforts to enforce Title IX protections for students.

Of the 1,100 allegations, approximately 320 employees resigned or retired before final disciplinary action, whilst 280 resulted in findings that the employee was not responsible, 200 resulted in findings of responsibility, and 230 remained pending. The department separately reported that schools recorded approximately 11,800 incidents of rape or sexual assault in total during the same period, with roughly 4 per cent attributed to school staff. This was the first year staff sexual offences reporting became mandatory, and the data collection comes as the Trump administration's Department of Education has launched a national initiative with 20 directed investigations aimed at protecting students from sexual misconduct by adults in schools.
