US midterm elections 2026: Abdul El-Sayed becomes first Muslim elected to Senate
Progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Senate race and is set to become the first Muslim to serve in the US Senate when he takes office in January. His victory is significant both as a milestone in US political representation and as a win for a progressive campaign that challenged party insiders and pro-Israel lobbying groups.
With 80 per cent of votes counted, El-Sayed led Republican Mike Rogers by 51.8 per cent to 46.2 per cent; the Associated Press called the race. He thanked supporters and criticised President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance for Islamophobic remarks, and said the country should not send tax money to support what he described as apartheid or genocidal war. Aipac spent $42 million opposing him, and he had earlier beaten a party-backed candidate in the Democratic primary.
In short
- Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Senate seat.
- He will be the first Muslim US senator.
- He campaigned against Aipac spending and for progressive causes.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Supporters can argue that El-Sayed’s election broadens representation in the Senate and gives voters a progressive voice willing to challenge party insiders and powerful lobbying groups. They may see his criticism of US support for Israel as a principled call to align foreign policy with human rights, and his victory as evidence that such views can win broad electoral support.
The case against
Critics can argue that a senator’s first responsibility is to represent the whole state and weigh national security and diplomatic relationships alongside human rights concerns. They may worry that sharply condemning US support for Israel, particularly in terms such as “apartheid” or “genocidal war”, risks deepening division or weakening an important alliance, while his outsider campaign could make effective work with party colleagues harder.
Explained simply
The US Senate is one of the two chambers of Congress, the federal legislature, and each state elects two senators to six-year terms. Senators vote on national laws and can approve senior government appointments and treaties.
Michigan’s Senate seat was contested by Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers. El-Sayed’s campaign was part of a wider debate within the Democratic Party over progressive policies, party support for candidates and US aid to Israel; Aipac is a US lobbying group that supports a strong US-Israel relationship.
If confirmed when he takes office, El-Sayed would be the first Muslim senator in US history. The result also matters because Michigan is a politically competitive state, and Senate elections can affect which party has influence over federal legislation and government appointments.
