The United States is imposing an import ban on a range of Canadian products, including alcohol, dairy and motor vehicles, in response to Canadian retaliatory tariffs on American goods. President Donald Trump signed executive orders on Tuesday accusing Canada of "discriminating in fact against the commerce of the United States", with the ban due to take effect on 29 September. The move marks a further escalation in a trade dispute between the two neighbours, with no new negotiations scheduled since talks broke down in late August.

The row began after the White House imposed 50% tariffs on around $20bn (£14.8bn) of Canadian goods last month, prompting Canada to introduce matching dollar-for-dollar tariffs on US steel, clothing and furniture, which came into force after midnight on Tuesday. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his country's shift away from relying on the US as its largest trading partner "will come at a cost". Both sides say they want a deal, but relations have also soured over non-trade issues, including Trump's order in August to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America".
