US to host first Women’s Club World Cup in 2028

BBC Sport ·

Fifa has confirmed that the United States will host the inaugural Women’s Club World Cup in January 2028. The new competition will bring leading women’s club sides together every four years, while adding to an already busy international calendar.

The 19-team tournament is scheduled for 5 to 30 January, with Arsenal, Barcelona, Gotham, Club America, Corinthians, Naegohyang and Wuhan Jiangda among the seven clubs already qualified. Twelve places remain to be filled, including six for European clubs; the US was chosen partly for its experience hosting major Fifa events and the growing interest in women’s football.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

A Women’s Club World Cup could give leading club sides a rare global stage, raise the profile of the women’s game and create new commercial and sporting opportunities. Supporters may argue that the US has the experience and audience to launch the competition successfully, and that a four-yearly event can become a valuable addition to the sport’s calendar.

The case against

A new tournament may add pressure to an already busy calendar, increasing travel and workload for players and disrupting domestic competitions. Critics may also question whether its benefits will be shared widely across women’s football, or accrue mainly to a small number of clubs and a host market, while established competitions receive less attention.
