Clinton, Utah, has been divided after Mayor Marie Dougherty and Fire Chief Jason Poulsen allowed personal fireworks in much of the city despite temporary statewide restrictions prompted by severe wildfire conditions. The decision led to hostile reactions, including an online threat to burn down the mayor’s home, highlighting the tension between public safety concerns and support for holiday traditions.

Governor Spencer Cox’s order covered 2–5 July and allowed councils, working with fire officials, to designate areas where fireworks could be used safely. Clinton kept fireworks banned in mapped high-risk areas but permitted them elsewhere, arguing that most of the city did not face an extreme wildfire hazard. Utah was experiencing historic drought and hundreds of fires, with more than 75% of wildfires reported as human-caused.
