Belgium have appointed former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel as head coach until Euro 2028, replacing Rudi Garcia after the Red Devils’ 2026 World Cup quarter-final defeat by eventual champions Spain. The appointment gives Belgium a coach with recent domestic success in the country as it seeks to develop a disciplined, competitive side capable of challenging leading international teams.

Van Bommel, 49, will begin officially on 15 August after a two-year spell at Royal Antwerp, where he won the Belgian league, Belgian Cup and Belgian Super Cup. His coaching staff will include Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens and Reinier Robbemond, and his first major fixtures will be Nations League matches against Italy, France and Turkey in September and October.
