Van Gogh painting worth $180m leads long-hidden collection sale
Vincent van Gogh’s *Châtaigniers en fleurs* has gone on display in London before its sale at Sotheby’s in New York on 18 November. Painted in 1890, during the final months of his life, it is one of 12 Impressionist and modern works from the late Argentinian collector Nelly Arrieta de Blaquier’s long-hidden collection, whose appearance on the market has been described as a historic event.
The Van Gogh is valued at $180m (£136m), while Paul Cézanne’s *Harlequin* is valued at $150m; the 12 works are expected to fetch more than $450m altogether. The paintings will travel from London to Taipei, Hong Kong and Paris before the auction. Only eight of Van Gogh’s paintings made in Auvers-sur-Oise, where he painted *Châtaigniers en fleurs* shortly before his death, are held privately.
