‘Vast majority’ of Iran’s attempted attacks on Strait of Hormuz are unsuccessful, CENTCOM spokesman says
US Central Command says most Iranian attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz have failed, and the waterway remains open. The claim follows the sinking of the GFS Pride, a Singapore-flagged, Cyprus-owned container ship that caught fire after being struck by an Iranian projectile.
CENTCOM spokesman Tim Hawkins said about 97% of ships seeking to pass have done so without being hit. Commander Adm. Brad Cooper said roughly 400 merchant ships transited in the past seven days, while US forces helped Gulf partners ship more than 100 million barrels of crude; the International Maritime Organization reports over 20 civilian mariners killed since February. Hawkins also said more than 50,000 US service members are stationed across the Middle East and that US forces are enforcing a blockade on Iranian trade, with humanitarian shipments permitted.
