Venezuelan authorities have released dozens of political prisoners, according to human rights groups, shortly after interim President Delcy Rodríguez met US President Donald Trump. The releases have renewed opposition demands for free elections and may represent a key concession to Washington, although the government has not confirmed their cause or scale.

Among those freed were Wilder Vasquez, Miguel Castillo Cedeño and Frank Cabañas, who had faced lengthy or disputed imprisonment. The releases follow an earlier scheme that freed hundreds of detainees but was reportedly halted in April, with Foro Penal saying fewer than half of Venezuela’s political prisoners had been released. Opposition groups continue to dispute the 2024 election, in which Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner, while the US has backed Rodríguez as an interim successor.
