The Venice Film Festival has unveiled the lineup for its 83rd edition, revealing a marked absence of major Hollywood studio titles and a sharp drop in female-directed films in the main competition. Warner Bros' big autumn releases and most of Netflix's slate have bypassed the Lido, while Disney's presence is limited to a single documentary, mirroring a wider trend of studios skipping European festivals this year, with Toronto reportedly faring better in securing studio and streamer backing.

Despite the studio shortfall, plenty of star names are expected to walk the red carpet, including Robert Pattinson, Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Rooney and Kate Mara, Orlando Bloom, Alicia Vikander, Susan Sarandon and Russell Crowe, alongside a promised appearance from Oasis's Noel and Liam Gallagher for a documentary about their reunion tour. George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn will receive lifetime achievement Golden Lions, and Maggie Gyllenhaal heads the jury. Notably, gender parity has slipped since Guillermo del Toro's 2018 call for a 50:50 split by 2020, with director May-el Toukhy the sole woman among the 20 films in this year's competition, a stark contrast to last year's six female-led contenders.
