Veolia has completed a carbon-capture trial at its Sheffield Energy Recovery Facility, which turns non-recyclable waste into electricity and heat. The development matters because capturing carbon dioxide from waste combustion could reduce the climate impact of energy-from-waste plants, though further work would be needed before any larger-scale deployment.

The trial forms part of Veolia’s efforts to develop carbon capture, utilisation and storage technologies for its UK facilities. Sheffield’s plant processes residual waste while supplying the National Grid and the city’s district energy network, making it a potential test case for reducing emissions from an established local energy source.
