Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed comfortably won his Democratic primary on Wednesday, seeing off two progressive challengers as he seeks a sixth term in the US Senate. The result underlines the enduring strength of the party's moderate establishment even amid a broader push from the left, and sets up a general election contest in November against Republican Ray McKay and independent Michael Bahry.

Reed, 76, defeated Connor Burbridge and Luis Muñoz, both of whom campaigned on more left-wing positions including abolishing ICE, taxing wealth and ending aid to Israel. First elected to the Senate in 1996, Reed is the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee and also sits on the Appropriations, Banking and Intelligence committees; he has backed continued military support for Israel while criticising Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. His financial advantage was stark: his campaign reported around $3.4 million in receipts and nearly $3.1 million in cash on hand through 20 August, compared with just over $25,000 raised by Burbridge, while Muñoz reported no fundraising total.
