Terry Matalas, showrunner of the new Disney+ series VisionQuest, has discussed how the mysterious sci-fi show ties into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ahead of its launch. The series follows Vision (Paul Bettany), who has spent years in hiding in Scotland since his identity crisis in WandaVision, working at a local pub by day and containing Ultron (James Spader) within his digital mind by night. The interview matters for fans trying to work out how much prior viewing is required, and clarifies creative choices such as why Ultron appears in human form rather than as a CGI robot.

Matalas, also known for 12 Monkeys and Star Trek: Picard, revealed the series is set around the same time as Spider-Man: Brand New Day and features Vision's son Tommy. He explained that casting James Spader as a human Ultron, rather than using CGI throughout, was a creative rather than budgetary decision, driven by wanting Spader and Bettany to act opposite one another. Marketed as the conclusion of a trilogy alongside WandaVision and Agatha All Along, Matalas said viewers do not strictly need to have seen both prior shows, though familiarity with WandaVision is recommended given VisionQuest's direct narrative link to it.
