Volkswagen’s slippery new EV breaks a bunch of efficiency records
Volkswagen has unveiled the Mission Efficiency, a near-production electric coupe prototype it claims is the world's most aerodynamic road-legal vehicle, as carmakers race to improve EV efficiency and reduce charging anxiety. Rather than relying on exotic new battery or motor technology, VW achieved the breakthrough largely through design, reshaping components shared with its upcoming ID. Polo and ID. Cross models into a slippery, teardrop-shaped body with covered wheels, frameless windows and flush door handles.
The prototype recorded a drag coefficient of just 0.158 and consumed 6.48kWh per 100km in constant-speed testing, figures VW says are records for a road-approved car. In a real-world demonstration, it travelled 1,278.36km from Wolfsburg to Vienna on a single charge of its 54.9kWh battery, still arriving with 164km of range left. Compared with the mechanically similar ID. Polo, it uses over 30% less energy above 80km/h, while lightweight panelling, a bring-your-own-device infotainment setup and solar roof panels further trim weight and power draw.
