VRChat rejects AI content labels despite strong user support

Engadget ·

VRChat says it will not introduce labels for AI-generated content or filters to remove it from search results, despite 95 per cent of survey respondents wanting some form of AI label. The decision matters because the platform hosts user-created virtual worlds, and labels could affect how creators present their work and how users find it.

The company said labels might be used inaccurately and could encourage users to investigate or harass creators suspected of using AI. It is still considering a “Human-authored” label and a field listing tools used, but has made no decision. VRChat plans to focus on changes it says have community support, including accurate thumbnails, improved discovery tools and making quality a core metric.

In short

  • 95 per cent of surveyed users wanted some form of AI label.
  • VRChat will not label or filter AI-generated content for now.
  • The company cited risks of mislabelling and creator harassment.
