War inside Commonwealth Bank as staff seethe over ‘top performers’ LinkedIn boasts from lavish awards trip while 800 jobs disappear

Daily Mail · 1 month ago

Commonwealth Bank of Australia is facing internal discontent after it flew its top-performing staff and their families to a luxury resort in Cairns, Far North Queensland, for a multi-day conference and lavish awards night, just five weeks before announcing a fresh round of job cuts. The event, held on the last weekend of May, was widely celebrated in glowing LinkedIn posts by award winners, which have since become a talking point inside the bank as roughly 800 jobs disappear this year. The juxtaposition of celebration and redundancies has reportedly stoked resentment among staff.

The centrepiece of the trip was the Diamond Awards, a long-standing part of CommBank's internal reward structure that recognises excellence in lending, relationship management and distribution, with categories such as Private Banker of the Year and Best New Lender of the Year. Attendees included staff from the bank's Premier Banking division, which serves high-net-worth clients, and from Commonwealth Private, a subsidiary catering to households earning over $450,000 a year and managing loans exceeding $2.5 million. In the days following the event, dozens of attendees posted on LinkedIn describing the "unforgettable" and "incredible" weekend and thanking the bank for the experience.
