Warframe officially adds a whole new star system in December

Polygon ·

Digital Extremes has confirmed that Warframe: Tau, a free expansion adding a new star system, will launch in December 2026. It marks the first major move beyond the Origin System, where nearly all of the game has taken place over its 13-year history, and opens up a setting long referenced in the lore.

The expansion includes a new single-player story chapter and Brysko, Warframe’s 67th playable character, voiced by Matt Mercer and inspired by noir detectives. Players can unlock him through gameplay or buy him, then explore missions in Tau’s Perita and Fornax locations through a dedicated Star Chart. Developer Megan Everett says the Origin System will continue to receive stories and content.

In short

  • Warframe: Tau launches free in December 2026.
  • The expansion adds the long-awaited Tau star system.
  • A new story and playable Warframe, Brysko, are included.

Explained simply

Warframe is a free online action game in which players control powerful suits called Warframes and take on missions across a science-fiction setting. For most of its 13-year history, that setting has been the Origin System, a network of planets and locations linked by the game’s stories and missions.

Tau is a star system that has been part of Warframe’s background lore but has not previously been a major playable setting. The expansion adds a story chapter and new missions there, alongside Brysko, a playable character players can obtain through gameplay or purchase.

The change gives players a new area to explore while leaving room for the game’s existing setting to continue developing. Digital Extremes, the studio behind Warframe, says it will keep adding stories and content in the Origin System too.
