Wildfires raging around Spokane, Washington, have destroyed roughly 600 homes and forced about 60,000 people to evacuate, in what officials describe as an unprecedented crisis for the region. Three fires — the Old Trails, Autumn Lane and Fairview fires — have burned more than 7,000 acres combined, with nearly half of Spokane's neighbourhoods either evacuated or under threat as of 2-3 August 2026.

The largest blaze, the Old Trails Fire, has scorched over 3,600 acres northwest of the city, which is Washington's second-largest with a population above 230,000. The cause remains unknown, though high winds and hot, dry conditions have fuelled the fires' rapid spread, and a recent shift in wind direction has further hampered containment efforts. No deaths or injuries have been reported so far. Local and out-of-state firefighters are battling the blazes, the Red Cross has opened shelters downtown, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency is coordinating disaster assistance; Mayor Lisa Brown said a large area remains under a Level 3 "get out immediately" evacuation order, adding that the fires "are not contained up to this point."
