Watch: GODSMACK/Ex-DREAM THEATER Drummer MIKE MANGINI Answers Questions About Technique, Stamina, Drum Setup And More

Blabbermouth · 3 hours ago

Godsmack drummer and former Dream Theater member Mike Mangini has released a 22-minute video answering fan questions about drumming technique, ergonomics, stamina, equipment and how he memorises complex progressive music. The video draws on training principles Mangini developed over his career, including the methods behind his "World's Fastest Drummer" records, and offers insight into how a top-level drummer approaches practice and performance.

In one exchange, Mangini explains how he achieves precise double-bass playing by watching his knees, feet and heels during practice to identify which muscles need adjustment, and by keeping his heels raised so his calf muscles drive the beater rather than a leg lift. The video follows a busy period for Mangini: he made his live debut with Godsmack in June 2026 after being brought in following Wade Murff's abrupt departure, itself a replacement for longtime drummer Shannon Larkin, who left the band in late 2024. Mangini previously spent nearly a decade with Dream Theater after a widely publicised audition in 2010, and has also played with Extreme and Steve Vai, taught at Berklee College of Music, launched the band Monolith in 2025, and released a solo album, "Invisible Signs", in 2023.
