Billie Joe Armstrong performed David Bowie and Nirvana covers at recent US shows with his covers band, The Coverups. The appearances gained attention because Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson joined the band for Bowie’s ‘All The Young Dudes’, while Armstrong dedicated Nirvana’s ‘Drain You’ to the late L7 bassist Jennifer Finch.

The tribute took place at The Roxy in West Hollywood on 20 July, two days after Finch died aged 59 following an aggressive brain cancer diagnosis. At a San Diego show on 23 July, Dickinson sang on the 1972 Bowie song; The Coverups also played ‘Ziggy Stardust’ and songs by The Strokes, Tom Petty, Buzzcocks and Bryan Adams. A fundraiser for Finch’s treatment and care raised $300,000 in under three days, with Billie Joe Armstrong’s wife Adrienne among its donors.

  • Armstrong honoured Jennifer Finch with a Nirvana cover.
  • Bruce Dickinson joined The Coverups for Bowie.
  • Finch’s fundraiser raised $300,000 rapidly.
