A new monkey species has been confirmed by scientists in the Democratic Republic of Congo, identified by its distinctive pinkish-orange lips and black face. The primate was found living high in the tree canopy of dense tropical forest in Lomami National Park, in the central-east of the country. Its discovery highlights how much remains unknown about the natural world, even in well-studied regions.

Conservationists first reported spotting the animal in 2008, but it took a further sighting a decade later, in 2018, for an international team to launch a proper search and study of the species. Dr Karen Laurenson, Africa director at the Frankfurt Zoological Society, described the find as "amazing", noting it demonstrates there is "a lot out there in the natural world that needs to be explored".
