Eidevall backs San Diego Wave to win NWSL playoffs after rebuild

The Guardian ·

Jonas Eidevall says San Diego Wave can win the NWSL playoffs as his team enter the final two regular-season matches in second place, one point off the lead. Their five-game winning run follows a rebuild after several senior players left, and Eidevall says the club’s shared approach has helped create belief and stronger connections.

The team has focused on developing technically skilled young players within the league’s salary cap, while building a style that starts with playing out from the back. Defenders Kristen McNabb and Kennedy Wesley lead the league in completed passes, and 18-year-olds Melanie Barcenas and Kimmi Ascanio are among those progressing. Eidevall says the NWSL’s close competition, limited roster sizes and lack of a European-style second team bring different challenges from his time at Arsenal.

  • San Diego Wave are second, one point off top spot.
  • Eidevall believes his team can win the playoffs.
  • The rebuild has centred on young talent and technical play.
