‘We don’t need to save anyone’s job,’ says Man Utd captain Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes says reports about a rift with Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick contained “a lot of lies”, and that the pair have cleared the air. After being dropped to the bench following criticism of Carrick’s tactics, Fernandes said the manager’s selection decision was fair and had not changed his belief in the staff or his aim to win.

Fernandes scored the penalty that began United’s comeback from 2-0 down to beat Roma 3-2, ending a nine-game winless run and easing pressure on Carrick. United are 17th in the Premier League after taking one win from their first nine league games, while the victory was their second in four Champions League matches. Fernandes said the win was needed by the club and players, adding: “We don’t need to save anyone’s job.”
