Written for The Scorpion King, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s first leading film role, the song connected with the film’s warrior protagonist while reflecting vocalist Sully Erna’s own feelings of isolation and responsibility.

Director Chuck Russell approached Erna with the film’s concept, inspiring lyrics about a powerful figure who longs not to be alone. The song’s success helped establish Johnson’s move from wrestling into Hollywood, while Erna later revisited his personal experiences—including crime, drugs and violence—in the 2023 documentary I Stand Alone: The Sully Erna Story.
