We Sat Down with D&D Game Designer James Wyatt to Talk Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft

IGN ·

Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft is designed as a D&D campaign setting on Azeroth, rather than an attempt to reproduce the MMO’s combat systems. Principal designer James Wyatt said the expansion aims to make the world and familiar character choices accessible within D&D’s imaginative, role-playing approach.

Wyatt said the book includes a brief introduction to D&D and points new players to D&D Beyond for help getting started. In early playtests at Blizzard, some participants were new to the tabletop game; Wyatt described one player whose Forsaken Warlock improvised wildly after a spell went wrong. The selected dungeons were chosen in part for how they connect to six major conflicts that have shaped Azeroth.

  • The expansion brings D&D campaigns to Azeroth.
  • It keeps D&D’s imaginative play at its centre.
  • Dungeon choices reflect six major Azeroth conflicts.
