The device aims to close the gap between exposure and awareness, since threats like toxic gas or tainted water often cannot be detected by sight or smell, and checking a phone alert can waste valuable time when someone is already near danger.

The patch uses distinct vibration patterns to indicate which type of hazard has been detected, allowing wearers to distinguish between different risks without needing to look at a screen. The research team has also created a related version of the sensor technology designed to give robots a form of chemical awareness, extending the detection system beyond human use.
